1700 projects in Poland’s regions

Polska prezydencja w Radzie UE

Regional European Information Centres played a key role in informing Poles about the Presidency.

Regional European Information Centresare located in the largest Polish cities, usually voivodship capitals. They have been in operation since 1999 and their basic task has been to inform the inhabitants of the country’s regions about matters pertaining to the European Union, the principles on which it functions and, in particular, aspects directly affecting Poland. In the latter half of 2011, the Regional European Information Centres took up the task of supplying information on activities connected to Poland’s EU Council Presidency.

In 2011, the network of information centres carried out more than 4,000 individual tasks, of which nearly 1,700 were directly related to the Polish Presidency.

The actual projects carried out took on a variety of forms. They included European lessons for school children and young people, meetings, open lectures, information stands, contests, consultations and experts as well as training seminars and conferences. Individual centres also made contact with local media, resulting in numerous press articles as well as radio and television programmes.

Among the more interesting initiatives was an online multimedia educational game called ‘Poland at the European Union’s helm’. Its creator was the Regional European Information Centre of Katowice. Subsequently, a simulated session of the EU Council devoted to the new EU budget was held for secondary school pupils in Lublin. In Cracow, a campaign called ‘Jedensiedem.eu’ (‘Oneseven.eu’) took place in which participants had to guess the significance of specially distributed posters. The finale of that campaign was the Tram to the EU event, in which tram passengers were acquainted with EU affairs and later took part in a debate taking place at the tram’s final stop.
